During the fall of 1991, the Mexican Institute of Psychiatry and the M
inistry of Public Education conducted the field work of a national stu
dent survey on substance abuse. It included information on 12 differen
t substances, including tobacco and alcohol. The score items of the WH
O student questionnaire were included. It was administered to a sample
of 61 779 highschool students, from rural and urban areas. The sample
design allows the production of prevalence rates for each one of the
32 states that form the Mexican Republic. The paper provides informati
on on prevalence of use by groups of the population and related variab
les.
