Abstract
As growing numbers of institutions consider creative, low-cost methods to raise student retention rates, the use of administrators as studen t ''mentors'' to complement the academic advising and mentoring done b y faculty members is shown to be an effective approach to strengthenin g the connections between a first-year student and her or his institut ion.
