Powdery CuGaS2 has been synthesized by the homogeneous precipitation i
n an aqueous solution containing prescribed amounts of Cu2+, Ga3+, S2O
3(2-) and acetic acid at 85-degrees-C for 1h followed by thermal treat
ment at 800-degrees-C for 1h and then immersing in 10% KCN solution fo
r 300s. The analytical values for the sample thus obtained are Cu 1.01
: Ga 1.00 : S 2.05 in fair agreement with stoichiometric ratio. The f
inal product with bright yellow in color was obtained in 71% yield. By
use of this product, it is possible to grow the single crystal for th
e use in optical devices by chemical transport. As-grown crystal of ch
alcopyrite with well developed (112) plane showed the sharp photolumin
escence in green and red zones under laser beam excitation.
