Abstract
Results of complex physicochemical, crystallochemical, and rheological studies of aqueous montmorillonite dispersions are summarized. The ro le of modifier (bis-quaternary and tertiary-quarternary ammonium salts ) nature in the formation and strengthening of thixotropic disperse sy stems is established. Some assumptions on the mechanism of interaction of these cationic surfactants with the surface of the dispersed phase of montmorillonite suspensions are made; the observed effects of thix otropic strengthening are explained.
