Water retention values of cotton linters and viscose wood pulp treated
with different concentrations of sodium hydroxide, in the pretreatmen
t step during xanthation, are studied. The effect of graft copolymeriz
ation of acrylamide onto cotton linters and viscose wood pulp by using
xanthate method on water retention values is illustrated. The obtaine
d results show that a lower concentration of sodium hydroxide has a sl
ight effect on water retention values. It is found also that water ret
ention values are affected not only by the crystallinity of cellulose
but also by the polymer loading and graft yield. Water retention value
s of grafted wood pulp possess higher values than grafted cotton linte
rs.
