An occurrence of nitrammite (NH4NO3) in KwaZulu-Natal quarries is repo
rted and a detailed description presented together with X-ray diffract
ion data. The status of ammonium nitrate as a mineral species, particu
larly in the occurrences described, is evaluated. It is considered tha
t these are not a natural mineral deposit but anthropogenic occurrence
s linked to the commercial explosive used during quarrying operations.
