Two species of Sabnonella are reported from captive Phelsuma spp., one
of which (Salmonella houten), was pathogenic. Twelve geekos developed
clinical signs of anorexia, diarrhoea, dehydration and cachexia. Ten
died over a period of eight weeks and deaths occurred three to six wee
ks from the commencement of illness. Necropsy findings included dehydr
ation, emaciation and liver necrosis. Salmonella houten was isolated T
he response of sick geekos to antibiotics and supportive therapy is di
scussed.
