Abstract
An approach for efficient control of the population dynamics in the pr esence of competing multiphoton transitions is developed and demonstra ted for the state-selective vibrational excitation of the OH bond on a femtosecond time scale, The controlling scheme includes coherent supe rposition of properly optimized infrared laser pulses.
