Fm. Chu et Dp. Pope, DEFORMATION TWINNING IN INTERMETALLIC COMPOUNDS - THE DILEMMA OF SHEARS VS SHUFFLES, Materials science & engineering. A, Structural materials: properties, microstructure and processing, 170(1-2), 1993, pp. 39-47
In this paper the geometric description and general theory of mechanic
al twinning are reviewed, the twins in general lattices and superlatti
ces are summarized, and the kinematic process by which mechanical twin
s form is revisited. A case study of mechanical twinning of HfV2 + Nb,
a C15 (cubic) Laves phase, is presented and the synchroshear of selec
ted atomic layers is proposed to explain the physical process of twin
formation. If the twins form in this way, then long shear vectors and/
or atomic shuffles are not really necessary.
