Ms. Keshavan et al., FRONTAL-LOBE METABOLISM AND CEREBRAL MORPHOLOGY IN SCHIZOPHRENIA - P-31 MRS AND MRI STUDIES, Schizophrenia research, 10(3), 1993, pp. 241-246
The relation between frontal lobe membrane phospholipid metabolism as
measured by 31Phosphorus magnetic resonance spectroscopy (P-31 MRS) an
d cerebral morphology as measured on magnetic resonance images (MRI) w
as examined in nine first episode neuroleptic naive schizophrenic pati
ents. Total corpus callosal area was significantly correlated with pho
sphodiester concentration. When examined separately, this relation was
confined to the rostral quartile (genu) of the corpus callosum. The p
athophysiological significance of this finding is discussed in relatio
n to neurodevelopmental hypotheses of schizophrenia.
