The ferning test can be regarded as a crystallization process obtained
by simple water subtraction. Such a process is feasible for every kin
d of ocular fluid (i.e. tears and aqueous, vitreous and subretinal flu
ids). The ferning test can be described in terms of fractal geometry,
as the image characteristics related to this test are consistent with
three of the main properties of fractals: self-similarity, fractal dim
ension and lacunarity.
