Abstract
Methodologies to improve Landsat TM forest classifications of alpine r egions through the removal of some radiometric and geometric distortio ns are tested. Besides correcting for sensor and system induced errors , geometric corrections are performed using a digital elevation model. Then scene related effects such as differences in illumination as wel l as the height dependent atmospheric influence and adjacency effects are corrected. The obtained improvement of the accuracy of a forest cl assification can be demonstrated against excellent ground truth.
