A Cr-related near-infrared photoluminescence (PL) band in ZnSe with a
main no-phonon line at 10 702.2 cm(-1) is investigated. Zeeman splitti
ng indicates a tetragonally distorted ground state. The experimental d
ata agree well with calculations using a spin Hamiltonian with paramet
ers obtained from the T-5(2)(D) ground state of ZnSe:Cr2+(d(4)). This
contradicts a former assignment of the PL band to a T-4(1)(G) --> (6)A
(1)(S) emission of ZnSe : Cr+(d(5)). Crystal field calculations demons
trate that the observed no-phonon lines and the corresponding luminesc
ence band can reasonably be interpreted in terms of a T-3(1)(H) --> T-
5(2)(D) transition within the d(4) configuration of Cr2+. Furthermore,
the influence of unmodulated supplementary irradiation on transmissio
n and PL excitation spectra is discussed.
