In 20 normal subjects, intracompartmental pressure measurements were m
ade at three different sites in the volar forearm: half the distance b
etween the medial epicondyle and ulnar styloid and at points 4 cm prox
imal and 4 cm distal. The pressure measurements were made using a hand
-held digital compartment pressure monitor. The study demonstrated tha
t in the uninjured volar compartment, clinically significant (5 mm Hg)
intracompartmental pressure differences exist over distances as littl
e as 4 cm.
