Abstract
The problem of the diffraction of a plane electromagnetic wave by a vo lume phase transmission grating is solved by coupled-wave theory for t he condition of total internal reflection of light at the hologram bou ndary. Analytical expressions are obtained for calculating the diffrac tion efficiency of the TM wave, which can be applied to the case of gr azing incidence, when the second derivatives in the coupled-wave equat ions must be taken into account.
