The radiation chemistry of perfluoropolypropene and perfluoropolytrime
thylene oxides has been investigated by ESR spectroscopy of the interm
ediate free radicals and by NMR spectroscopic detection of the major c
hanges occurring in the structure of the oligomers. The major radiolyt
ic products have been related to C-C and C-O bond scissions and to a m
inor participation of C-F bond cleavage. The results have been rationa
lized in terms of ionic and free-radical reactions stemming from the f
ormation of primary ether cation-radicals.
