The reactions of 1:1 molar quantities of triethylene glycol (EO3) and
CdX2 (X = Cl, Br, I) in 3:1 CH3CN:CH3OH produced three different compl
exes which have been structurally characterized. In [Cd2(EO3)2(mu-EO3)
]Cl4.2H2O, one EO3 ligand coordinates exclusively to one metal ion, wh
ile a second type of glycol coordination features donor interactions w
ith two different Cd2+ ions producing two six-coordinate metal centers
in the dimer. [Cd2Br4(EO3)2] contains two seven-coordinate Cd2+ cente
rs and is dimeric via two bridging bromide interactions. [Cd(EO3)2][Cd
I4] consists of eight-coordinate Cd2+ complex cations hydrogen bonded
to [CdI4]2- anions.
