Submicrometre-grained (SMG) copper with a mean grain size of 0.2 mum w
as produced by severe plastic deformation. In the samples obtained and
annealed, the strain amplitude dependences of the internal friction a
nd shear modulus defect were studied and the microhardness and tensile
strength were measured. A close correlation of elastic and inelastic
parameters with grain boundary states is shown. An analysis of the nat
ure of the combination of high damping and strength properties in SMG
copper is given.
