Abstract
An experimental method for measuring the permeability for flow through equiaxial mushy zones of Pb-Sn alloys was devised. With Pb-Sn alloys, dendritic structures could be maintained during the permeability test s. The volume fraction of liquid was varied from 0.31 to as high as 0. 49. With the results presented as dimensionless permeabilities, good a greement among globular, dendritic-globular, and dendritic microstruct ures was obtained for previoUS data on borneol-paraffin and Al-15.6wt. %Cu alloys, and the Pb-Sn alloys studied herein. The empirical data ag ree approximately with the analytical results for flow through regular arrays of spheres. which suggests that the analytical results can be used for extrapolations of permeability when g(L) > 0.49.
