Zr. Xu et al., EFFECT OF HIGH-TEMPERATURE EXPOSURE ON THE TENSILE-STRENGTH OF ALUMINA FIBER NEXTEL 610, Materials science & engineering. A, Structural materials: properties, microstructure and processing, 171(1-2), 1993, pp. 249-256
The tensile strength of an alpha-alumina fiber Nextel 610 after exposu
re to temperatures of 900, 1100 and 1300-degrees-C was determined usin
g a two-parameter Weibull distribution. This investigation showed that
the primary reason for the loss of the fiber strength was grain growt
h. Defects induced during high temperature exposure can be another sou
rce for the loss of the fiber strength. The fracture mechanism changed
from intergranular with increasing fiber grain size, as a result of i
ncreasing exposure temperature.
