Jj. Langmayr et al., ISCHEMIC LESIONS IN THE DISTRIBUTION OF T HE VERTEBRAL ARTERIES AFTERLUMBAR DISC SURGERY, Neurochirurgia, 36(5), 1993, pp. 164-166
We report on the case of a 61-year old man who developed a reversible
Brown-Sequard syndrome immediately after an uncomplicated lumbar disce
ctomy. Magnetic resonance imaging showed ischaemic lesions in the uppe
r cervical medulla, the caudal part of the medulla oblongata, and in t
he cerebellum. Vertebral artery compression due to spondylosis and hyp
erflexion of the cervical spine during operation is discussed as a pos
sible pathogenetic mechanism.
