The main aim of this paper is to provide insight in the determinants o
f the decision to participate (yes or no) in volunteer work and the de
cision with regard to the number of hours spent on volunteer work. The
se decisions are empirically analyzed with Dutch microdata for 1982 by
means of a logit and a tobit model. The results indicate that age, ed
ucation, family culture and the position on the labor market in combin
ation with sex are important determinants of volunteer labor supply.
