Hypertext-based information systems have received considerable attenti
on in the research and professional literature in recent years as tool
s for accessing unstructured textual and graphical information. Howeve
r, the application of hypertext and its effectiveness for explored bib
liographic retrieval has not been widely explored. This paper examines
several feasibility issues and initial design considerations for such
a hypertext system. A hypertext-based bibliographic retrieval system
incorporating these design issues, called HyperLynx, has been develope
d using Asymetrix Toolbook. By combining searchable term indexes and i
nter-record linkages between common authors and descriptors, a flexibl
e search environment is established conducive to browsing.
