In a retrospective study the presumed infection with parapoxvirus in t
hree calves of red deer (Cervus elaphus) was clarified electronmicrosc
opically. The animals found dead in a Bavarian hunting area in 1963 sh
owed macroscopical and histological lesions classified as those in lab
ial ecthyma contagiosum. This is perhaps the first report on ecthyma i
n free-living red deer.
