The results of measuring the adsorption of organic and inorganic subst
ances on iron are considered. The properties of iron as an adsorbent a
re found to depend on the nature of the adsorbed particles. Energetic
inhomogeneity of the iron surface is not revealed in the electrostatic
adsorption of cations, but is notable in the adsorption of nucleophil
ic particles, namely inorganic anions, sulfur-containing components, a
nd molecules with multiple bonds. Determining the type of adsorption i
sotherm provides additional information on the mechanism of the metal-
inhibitor interaction and, consequently, on the reasons that cause an
inhibition or a stimulation of the corrosion processes.
