Pm. Kruglyakov et Vv. Sviridov, HYDROPHILIC LIPOPHILIC BALANCE OF A SOLID, Colloid journal of the Russian Academy of Sciences, 55(2), 1993, pp. 304-309
The characteristics of the hydrophilic - lipophilic balance (HLB) of a
solid (contact angle, ratio of the heats of wetting by polar and apol
ar liquids) and different modifications of the ratios of the energies
of wetting (Gibbs energy of wetting) were analyzed. The HLB characteri
stic, the ratio of the energy of wetting of a body by a polar and apol
ar medium, is the most common and considers all types of interaction o
f a solid with a medium. For macroscopic compact bodies, the HLB is ex
pressed in terms of the surface tensions of liquids and the contact an
gle, and for a microscopic (dispersed) phase, it is expressed in terms
of the change in the energy in adsorption of vapors of liquids on a s
olid adsorbent. The experimental curve of the type and stability of em
ulsions stabilized with solid particles as a function of the energies
of wetting and HLB was examined. The HLB determined chromatographicall
y for powder of the sorbent Inerton AW are reported.
