A spectrophotometric method is considered for determining the optical
constants of transparent materials from measurements of the directiona
l transmittances of two plane-parallel plates of different thickness.
The system of transcendental equations relating these quantities is so
lved by Newton's method using a personal computer. The capabilities of
the method are demonstrated for the example of colored glasses. It is
shown how an error in the measurements of the transmittances and plat
e thickness affects the result of determining the optical constants.
