The application of hydrogen-donating hydroaromatics as radical scaveng
ers has been investigated, and it was found that (1) they can be used
as additives in various fields, (2) they can trap radicals even in the
presence of oxygen, (3) materials with much higher radical scavenging
abilities than tetralin can be produced from petroleum, and (4) these
materials are durable to heat and radiation owing to their pure hydro
carbon constituents. The effects of the hydroaromatic-type additives o
btained from heavy fractions of petroleum have been confirmed in the i
nhibition of various types of deterioration of hydrocarbon products, t
he restriction of coke formation in heavy oil cracking, and in other a
pplications.
