Some concepts of Lie algebra cohomology are used to systematize the se
arch for differential equations invariant under a given Lie group G. I
n particular, it is shown that if a 'strongly invariant' equation exis
ts, then all 'weakly invariant' equations differ from it only by an ar
bitrary multiplicative factor. If no 'strongly invariant' equation exi
sts, then cohomology theory can be used to simplify the search for 'we
akly invariant' equations.
