The fading puppy and kitten syndrome refers to losses during a time pe
riod immediately after birth. Causes are attributed to congenital anom
alies, nutritional diseases, abnormally low birth weights, traumatic i
nsults during or after the birth process, neonatal isoerythrolysis, in
fectious diseases, and other miscellaneous factors. Some losses are in
evitable; however, one may be able to identify the specific cause of a
fading syndrome and initiate the most appropriate management measures
. Once the primary cause is determined, a concerted effort must be mad
e to eliminate causative factors before the next breeding or purchase.
