Abstract
An assessment of the methodology of the piezoelectric ultrasonic compo site oscillator technique (PUCOT) shows that the present PUCOT equatio ns are invalid for anisotropic materials. The appropriate differential equations governing elastic waves propagating in thin rods are solved for the required relationships between the response resonant frequenc ies and the elastic constants. Experimental results for silver, alumin um, and copper single crystals, which have anisotropy factors of 3.1, 1.2, and 3.2, respectively, are presented to support the theoretical f indings.
