Abstract
The nonlinear equations of a free electron laser are formulated taking into account the space charge field. The presented method to calculat e the space charge field is based on using Green's function written do wn in the general form (not expanded in a Fourier series). The problem of the correct calculation of the space charge fields for the FEL wit h a planar undulator is discussed.
