The phosphate niobium bronzes form a large family of structures charac
terized by pentagonal or hexagonal tunnels. The host lattices of these
oxides, involving a mixed valency of niobium Nb(V)-Nb(IV)-are describ
ed here. The close relationships with pure octahedral structures, main
ly perovskites, hexagonal tungsten bronzes (HTB) and tetragonal tungst
en bronzes (TTB), and K3Nb8O21 are studied.
