Phoneme monitoring studies from 1969 to 1996 are reviewed and grouped
in terms of issues that have been addressed with the task. These issue
s include the contribution of the lexicon to speech perception, proces
sing complexity, attention, contribution of prosodic information, and
the basic unit of speech perception. Within each issue, task demands a
nd artifactual variables have been identified and highlighted.
