Abstract
Linear and chi(3) spectra of vacuum-deposited thin films of polythioph ene (PTh, prepared by an organometallic process) show vibronic structu res with an energy difference of about 1500 cm-1 (0.19 eV). The vibron ic structure is more clearly observed in the chi(3) Spectrum and is co nsidered to originate from coupling with the nu(c=c) vibration of the thiophene ring. Large chi(3) anisotropy with a chi parallel-to (3)/chi perpendicular-to (3) value of about six is observed with the PTh film vacuum deposited on substrates covered with a rubbed poly(p-phenylene ) thin layer.
