Abstract
A scheme for the preparation of general coherent superpositions of pho ton-number states is proposed. By strongly coupling an atom to a cavit y field, atomic ground-state Zeeman coherence can be transferred by (c oherent) adiabatic passage to the cavity mode and a general field stat e can be generated without atomic projection noise.
