Abstract
Benzidine administration in vivo decreased the efficiency of the prote ctive action of the antioxidant system. The total antioxidant activity of rat liver cytosol decreased along with superoxide dismutase and ca talase activities. Enomelanin promoted the restoration of superoxide d ismutase activity. These results suggest that the toxic effect of benz idine may be due to the impairment of the protective antioxidant mecha nisms of liver cells which control free radical-dependent processes.
