Abstract
The phase diagrams of the binary systems sodium-potassium, sodium-caes ium, and potassium caesium propionates have been investigated by diffe rential thermal analysis and hot-stage polarization microscopy. Smecti c liquid crystals in the systems with sodium propionate have been disc overed. Liquid crystal formation in binaries of two non-mesomorphic co mponents is explained by latent mesomorphism which is shown to be inhe rent to both sodium and potassium propionate.
