Due to the increasing cost of imported virgin pulp in the 1980s, Papel
es Nacionales, S.A. (PN) decided to build a de-inking plant to produce
a de-inked pulp from local wastepaper ledger grades that would largel
y replace imported pulp for the production of high quality tissue prod
ucts. The plant was to incorporate state-of-the-art process technology
and be designed to produce a pulp with a brightness of at least 80-de
grees ISO. The design, construction and start-up are presented.
