A simple theory was used to investigate the effects of transmission-re
flection properties of the barrier for the activated complex on the ch
arge transfer rate. Contrary to some charge transfer models that dispe
nse with the occurrence of an activated complex altogether, many of th
e reactions examined do involve the formation of an activated complex
characterized by a small barrier while some feature a barrier that is
fairly large. The complete absence of any barrier also occurs but not
as a rule.
