The soldier defensive secretion of three Amitermes species (A. arboreu
s, A. beaumonti and A. papuanus) have been analyzed by GC/MS. 4,11-epo
xy-cis-eudesmane and gamma1-cadinene are the main constituents of the
secretion of A. arboreus; neo-intermedeol and terpinolene those of the
secretion of A. beaumonti. Myrcene and five other monoterpenes consti
tute the bulk of the secretion of A. papuanus. These findings reinforc
e the hypothesis of a pre-Cretaceous evolution and dispersal of ancest
ral Amitermes.
