Variable-temperature solid-state C-13 NMR studies of the C60/n-pentane
inclusion compound are reported, aimed towards understanding the stru
ctural and dynamic consequences of a low-temperature phase transition
in this material. The phase transition occurs over a wide temperature
range, between ca. 210 and 173 K. In the high-temperature phase, the t
wo ends of the n-pentane molecule exchange rapidly (on the C-13 NMR ti
mescale) between two crystallographically inequivalent end-group envir
onments, whereas, in the low-temperature phase, this exchange process
does not occur (on the C-13 NMR timescale).
