An analytical method for the determination of aliphatic amines ranging
from C3 to C-10, C-12 and two diamines i.e. putrescine (C4) and cadav
erine (C5), has been developed. The reagents 9-fluorenylmethyl-chlorof
ormate (FMOC-Cl) or 2-(9-anthryl)ethyl chloroformate (AEOC) weres used
in pre-column derivatization of the amines investigated. The amino de
rivatives were separated using high performance liquid chromatography
(HPLC) in conjunction with fluorescence detection. For standard compou
nds investigated the detection limit is < 0.3 ng. This method has been
used for examination of exhaust emissions from both gasoline fueled c
ars and a diesel fueled engine with respect to amine emissions. The re
sults obtained indicate that the emission of amines (present in the st
andard mixture used) was, for a US FTP-75 transient test, less than 1
mug/km, if any of diem exist in the exhaust emission. Further, fuels (
gasoline and diesel) spiked with amines (standard mixture) showed no s
ignificant difference in comparison with the emissions originating fro
m the un-spiked fuel investigated.
