Abstract
Upeneus japonicus (Houttuyn, 1782), described from a single specimen f rom Japan, is shown to be a senior synonym of U. bensasi (Temminck et Schlegel). It ranges from Hokkaido and Korea south to Taiwan and Hong Kong. A neotype is described.
