Abstract
A symmetric phase-field model is used to study directional solidificat ion in two and three dimensions. Numerical evidence of tip-splitting, breathing modes, solitary modes, and other non-steady-state behavior i s seen in 2D. A simple model for the breathing modes is proposed. Fina lly, 3D simulations indicate a hexagonal ordering of cells.
