N. Hojlyng et al., FIRST CASES OF MICROSPORIDIOSIS IN SCANDINAVIAN PATIENTS WITH AIDS, Scandinavian journal of infectious diseases, 25(5), 1993, pp. 667-669
The first 2 cases of infection with Enterocytozoon bieneusi in Denmark
and Scandinavia are reported. Both patients were women and to the bes
t of our knowledge this is the first report of E. bieneusi in female A
IDS patients. Both had late stage AIDS, and both had complained of int
ermittent diarrhoea for more than 1 year. At the time microsporidiosis
was diagnosed, no other pathogens causing diarrhoea were found. Immun
odeficient patients with chronic unexplained diarrhoea should be inves
tigated for intestinal microsporidiosis, especially as treatment is no
w available.
