Abstract
A simple empirical relationship has been established for the estimatio n of lattice energies for alkali halide crystals directly from the val ues of interionic distances. Another new relation has also been propos ed between the lattice energy and plasma energy. The calculated plasma energy values are utilized in the estimation of electronic polarizabi lity in alkali halide crystals, in order to test the applicability of the proposed relations. Good agreement is observed between the compute d and literature values of electronic polarizability. The merits of th e present approach is discussed.
