Dinuclear and mononuclear Ni(II) complexes [Ni2(OAc)3(urea)(tmen)2](OT
f) and [Ni(OAc)(urea)2(tmen)](OTf) were prepared from the reaction of
[Ni2(OH2)(OAC)4(tmen)2] with Me3Si(OTf) and urea. The two complexes re
produce several of the known structural and spectroscopic properties o
f the dinickel core in the enzyme urease, which catalyzes the hydrolys
is of urea into ammonium and carbamate. The dinuclear complex, in part
icular, having two nickel ions and a single coordinated urea molecule,
assembles several components of the substrate-bound form of the enzym
