The maximum transmission length of data coded solitons at 5 Gbit/s has
been investigated for a simple Er-doped fibre amplifier system withou
t in-line soliton controls using short pulses generated by an InGaAsP
electroabsorption modulator. The use or low fibre dispersion and large
separation of solitons was effective in increasing the transmission d
istance up to 13 100 km with less than 10(-9) bit error rate. The obta
ined transmission capacity of 65 Tbit/s km is the largest reported for
soliton transmission experiments without soliton control.
