Abstract
System performances of direct detection optical fiber communication sy stems with optical amplifiers and dispersion compensators are investig ated theoretically and confirmed by experimental works for several dif ferent configurations. The experimental results agreed well with the c alculated results. The theoretical calculation predicts that a 120-km repeaterless transmission of 10 Gbit/s is possible through the standar d single-mode fiber using only one commercial fiber amplifier and a di spersion compensation fiber at the receiving end.
